I love the stark, stilllife quality of this photo. There's something so wholesome and yet lonesome about it.

Maybe its the depression-era simplicity of the large pan in the background, juxtaposed with the modern cereal bowl and spoon. It just hits me in a funny, pleasant way.

I know that some of this stuff is corn fritters, but I'm not at all sure about the rest of it. A remarkable looking breakfast, it is though. And that's all we care about at GREAT BREAKFAST.

But if you're in town and can find the place, this looks like it should be added to your list of things to do.

Naturally I'm familiar with the classic breakfast face, in which eggs are eyes and a nice piece of bacon doubles as a wonderous mouth.

Here's a nice twist on that old standby.

My only problem with this pic, is that I can't tell how big this bowl really is. I'm only sure it wouldn't be big enough. Here's a description from the chef/photographer:

"oatmeal made with water and steel cut oats, then topped with brown sugar and blowtorched for a crunchy brulee finish. served with blueberries, raspberries, and a little heavy cream."

My current personal favorite photo - at least for today!

For this wonderful feast you'll need the following!

1) A passion for treating and spoiling yourself with delicious food.
2) Organic free range eggs
3) Smoke cured bacon
4) Genuine South-African "Boerewors" (Grilled on the BBQ)
5) Hash Browns
6) Fried Banana
7) Fried Tomato
8) Fresh Fruit
9) Sparkling Wine! (The one in the picture is "JC Le Roux" from South-Africa - Very easy drinking! Perfect for the Breakfast of Kings!) - Essentially "Champagne"

Oh yes, and a fairly large plate ! (Dishwasher helps here too.. ha-ha)

We should live every day with passion and this is one hell of a way to start it off! The only other thing you need is for someone to share this with you !! Not to be taken alone - Oh no!

Have a great 2006! May all your days be as Fantastic and opulent as this! If I could invite anyone to a meal of my choice - this is what you would be served..

To me, this is as good as it gets.

I'm not sure what this dish is traditionally called. I'm not sure it's traditional. But making berry sandwiches with powdered sugar and french toast...well, I've heard of worse, less delectable ideas.

Starbucks warming up to breakfast

Up until now, Starbucks has ruled the world of overpriced coffee and confounding size terminology. Well, they're making a new bid to expand their empire: anyone up for a Venti Breakfast? Sure they've nibbled around the sandwhich business, and you could always buy a scone or a cookie. But now it looks as if they'll finally pair their admittedly excellent coffee with some morning fare.

From the CNN report:

Offering such trimmings as peppered bacon and Black Forest ham, Starbucks added the English muffin sandwiches to stores in Washington, D.C., last year, and in Portland, Oregon, last month. San Francisco stores will get them in early April, and Chicago outlets will start selling them later this year.
By the time its current fiscal year ends in October, Starbucks says it will offer breakfast sandwiches at roughly 600 stores -- up from about 250 today.

I don't hardly ever go to Starbucks unless I've got a gift certificate, but if there's a decent portable quiche to be had, I'll for sure head in and try it.

Yale College makes great Eggs Benedict.

Today, the Yale Daily News provides a comprehensive guide to cooking up some "Eggcelent Eggs Benedict." Why do I say comprehensive? Because they include a tandem recipe for "Heavenly Hollandaise Sauce." Now, I know more about eating breakfast than I do about making it, but the two of them together sound pretty delicious.

BONUS: When I scrolled to the bottom of the screen, I saw a small banner encouraging readers to become egg donors at Connecticut Fertility Associates.

Now that's synergy.
